The Roaming Gnome – From the Forest to the Hot Tub

From a simple burrow in a quiet forest glen, to a steaming hot tub in Fresno, gnomes are on the move. No longer content to stay at home and follow in the traditional and staid footsteps of their parents and grandparents, this new generation of modern and hip gnomes have discovered the world and the world has discovered them!

With backpacks brimming with gnome-necessities and MP3’s blaring, off the young gnomes go; seeking their fortunes, experiencing adventures and eagerly acclimating themselves to the world their ancestors feared.

How do these young gnomes fund their new-found love of travel? We understand from a highly reliable gnome source that they work their way through the world utilizing their talents from ages past: tending gardens and nurturing sick and injured animals. As we know, it has always been the responsibility of each and every gnome to care for the natural world and all creatures on it. These youngsters haven’t forsaken that responsibility. In fact, they’ve taken their expertise and vibrancy with them, and every country they visit benefits from their presence.

In their travels, they take time (as they’ve been taught since baby gnomes), to heal and nurture all living things as needed. In fact, you’ve probably experienced a gnome passing through and were unaware of it. Does your rose bush look better and healthier now than it did last week? Have those unsightly weeds in the flower bed been mysteriously removed? If so, you’ve been the fortunate benefactor of a roaming gnome. For payment, he most likely has taken that lost dime or raided the cellar for a turnip or two, but that is a small price to pay for his expert assistance.

No longer reclusive loners, roaming gnomes have actually started their own traveling clubs. Communally, a destination is chosen and each gnome makes his own way there. Once all the gnomes have arrived at the pre-arranged location, they have a great ‘gnome-a-bration.’ The ale flows and bread is devoured as each gnome shares his or her own tale of adventure. Photos are exchanged and after a week of hearty parties, the gnomes go their own separate ways again, meandering through the world to their next destination.

Unable to get tickets (ticket clerks rarely peer down to the ground to even notice the poor gnome standing there), most gnomes have to resort to hitching rides, hopping trains or stowing away in luggage on planes and boats. Gnomes aren’t picky about their modes of transportation and will gladly accept any ride offered. (Be sure and give a ride to a gnome you see hitch-hiking. It’s the only right thing to do.)

These youthful gnomes, once absolutely abhorrent to technology, now have no fear of it. They’ve embraced computers and all electronics and now easily utilize the Internet to keep their friends and families updated on their travels and to check on the status of things back home. Most roaming gnomes will check their ‘g-mails’ weekly at cyber café’s and public libraries when available.

The gnomes of the past, stalwart and serious, have met their match. The new gnome has decided to boldly go where no gnome has gone before. We applaud this progressive way of thinking and if there’s a gnome reading this is in a bus stop or train depot somewhere, this writer has left a dollar on her doorstep for you!
