Teak Care & Maintenance

Teak is a very dense hardwood that has an extremely high oil and wax content. These traits make teak durable for outdoor use. The wood is naturally resistant to rot or degradation caused by fungal decay. Also, the wood cells prevent attack by termites and other wood eating insects. Teak is easy to care for and maintain. If left untreated, teak will weather to a silvery gray color. This color change will not affect the durability of the furniture, but many people prefer teak’s original rich, golden color. If you want to maintain the golden color, you can do so by cleaning and oiling your teak, approximately every six months to a year.

We have listed below the teak care products we offer for sale and how to use them.

Teak Cleaner — Use This First

What it does: The cleaner removes dirt, mildew, stains and grey weathering.

How to use it: Apply the product with a bristle brush or scrubber pad. Rub in the direction of wood grain. Immediately rinse the wood with fresh water.

Benefits: Does not require any hard rubbing and no neutralizers or other chemicals needed.

Teak Brightener — Use This Second

What it does: The brightener enhances wood grain and natural color.

How to use it: Apply with a sponge, cloth or brush in the direction of the wood grain. Allow the application to soak (about 5 minutes) in the wood and then rinse with water.

Benefits : This is a safe, one-step formula with a wipe-on, wipe-off application.

Teak Oil — Use This Last

What it does: Teak oil protects the wood from weathering and damaging sunlight.

How to use it: After the teak has dried from the brightener, use a brush cloth or sponge to apply oil. Be sure to wipe off any excess. Apply additional coats as necessary to obtain desired color.

Benefits: Oil is a deep penetrating, fast-drying formula with ultraviolet inhibitors to protect wood from sunlight.

Note: Our Premium Teak Care Kit (at right) includes the three products described above (Teak Cleaner, Teak Brightener and Teak Oil), plus a Scrub Pad, Stainless Steel Scrubber, Foam Brush, and Latex Gloves. Many of these products may also be purchased separately.

Other Care Products

Magic Scrub Pad: This can be used between step 1 and 2. If any mildew is still visible, rub the blackened area with the Magic Scrub pad. Note: Do not use steel wool to remove mildew as this will leave slivers of steel on the wood which will rust and leave a stain.

Teak Wood Sealer:

What it does: Sealer protects wood from weathering and damaging sunlight.

How to use it: Use cleaner and brightener first. Use sealer in the place of the oil. Do not use them together. Apply to wood with foam brush using short strokes.

Benefits: Sealer lasts longer than teak oil.
